Ben de la Cour

Nashville, TN

Raised in Brooklyn, Ben de la Cour was playing New York City dive bars with his brother a full decade before he could legally drink. A high-school dropout, reformed metalhead and former amateur boxer, he received his education by listening to his parents’ records – a collection full of everything from Bob Dylan and The Everly Brothers to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath.

In 2018, de la Cour released his third album, “The High Cost of Living Strange.” It includes eight tracks of his self-proclaimed “Americanoir” style, weaving complex, mysterious and sometimes shocking storylines with a unique blend of instrumental backing and the occasional glimpse of gallows humor.

In February, de la Cour traveled to Winnipeg on an artist grant from the Canadian government to work with songwriter and JUNO-winning producer Scott Nolan. Recorded in the midst of a polar vortex where temperatures regularly dropped to -40 degrees, “Shadow Land” features de la Cour's brother Alex on drums, marking the first time the two worked together in over 10 years. Thematically and sonically, this album picks up where “The High Cost of Living Strange” left off, but with a darker and more electric sound.
