After independently booking and playing over 800 shows in 40 states, Joshua Powell got good and tired of folk music. Settling in the central city of Indianapolis in 2016 prompted a restructuring of his band, the adoption of an old cat and the processing of the geo-spiritual journeys of his nomadic bildungsroman. Powell emerged this year from a haze of smoke and paper-mache monster masks with the expansive new LP, “PSYCHO/TROPIC." This new dreamy freeform psychedelic rock ‘n roll is a hallucinatory time capsule, matched with nuanced, surreal lyrics. Enlivening their kaleidoscopic record with a live show that’s equal parts dive bar grit rock fury and poetic ethereal joy, Powell and his band are a groovy, metaphor-rich force with which to be reckoned, forever and ever, world without end.
